Clinical Trials
The Departments of Clinical Biochemistry in North Glasgow have been involved in organizing clinical trials and providing analytical requirements for work in Scotland and beyond for many years. This has ranged from one-off specialist tests for NHS hospitals to all aspects of safety, efficacy, and specialist testing for Phase IV and Phase V clinical trials. Success in the latter led to the setting up at Glasgow Royal Infirmary of a new Clinical Trials Unit (Director: Dr Allan Gaw) to design and manage large scale clinical studies. This Unit, owned jointly by the University of Glasgow and the North Glasgow Trust, is supported by major pharmaceutical companies. Our proven track history in attracting such work is based on our high quality analytical capability, versatility in catering for individual requirements, and the nationally and internationally recognised academic achievements of our staff. The Clinical Trials section within the Department of Clinical Biochemistry looks after the production of reports and preparation of sample kits for large clinical trials. It also supports some of the specialised units in liaison with clients. The Department is accredited to the UK government-approved standards of CPA (Clinical Pathology Accreditation). It incorporates two specialist laboratories - the Scottish Trace Element Unit and Micronutrient Unit, and the CDC (Center of Disease Control, Atlanta, US) aligned cholesterol standardisation laboratory.
